Mint Pea Soup

Mint and Peas - a wonderful combo. Don't you think ?

Mint by itself is a flavourful herb that lends itself to both savoury and sweet with equal gusto. Think Mint-Choco chip ice cream (yum!) or Green Apple-Mint Granita. Of course, in an Indian Kitchen, Mint / Pudina is a must have herb… I have even tried to grow the herb in my tiny balcony (See 2nd picture below).

Oct- Feb in Mumbai is the best season to get fresh mint, although it’s available in fresh form through the year. But the joy of homegrown mint is something else, right?

Mint Pea SoupPin

So, tell me what grows in your kitchen / herb garden?

fresh mint from my kitchen gardenPin

Did you know the origin of the word "Mint" ? ????????‍♀️

Its name was derived from the Greek mythological figure Minthe, a nymph who was transformed into the fragrant plant.Mint's scientific name is Mentha requienii.

Where all can mint be used?

  • Chaats without the ubiquitous mint-coriander chutney (a.k.a Hari Chatni) is impossible. Same goes with Pudina Chaas or Pudina Pulav. I personally love the following recipes with Mint:
  • Mint-Coriander tomato Salsa
  • My kids’ favourite Paneer- Pudinawale (cottage cheese in a lip smacking mint sauce)
  • My grandma’s heirloom recipe for Pudina Thogayal (South Indian style thick mint chutney)

Mint offering so many possibilities of going either After much ping-pong between a mint ice cream and soups, the latter won hands down.  Another winter special Soup that we enjoy at home is this Instant Pot Vegan Broccoli Soup

So, What are the ingredients going into today’s Veg and Gluten Free Mint-Pea soup ?

  • Fresh Mint - relieves flatulance, aids digestion (Indian readers will relate to “Pudina Hara” golis that our grandparents / parents used to take :p).Dried mint wouldn't work here.
  • Peas - Fresh / Frozen works. Great source of Plant protein, and rounds off the sharp pungency that sometimes mint might leave.
  • Stock / water - Stock works best, however I have used water today. For the best homemade stock (made with veggie odds and ends), click here.
  • Salt and pepper - to taste
  • Aromats - Onion and garlic + Bay leaf (as needed)
  • Potato - to give body to the stock (and reduce the need for cornflour or any other artificial thickening agent)

Let’s get to the recipe

    Notes

    • Fresh or frozen peas can be used. If using frozen, thaw it in ½ cup of water and add it.
    • Mint needs to be added in the end, else the soup will turn black .
    • White pepper powder works better in this recipe than black pepper powder
    • Use fresh mint instead of dried mint powder for best results

I love the sound of this soup! The combination of mint leaves and peas is quite interesting. With the white onion, bay leaf, garlic and hint of sugar, this must be so flavourful!
