Masala Murmura is a quick to make, almost-oil free and healthy snack for kids. My little one loves this and calls this Sukha Bhel (not quite a misnomer), and I make this quite often at home . Murumura (Puffed rice) is called Kadalepuri in Kannada, and for all those from Bangalore, you would remember those hawkers in Lalbagh / Cubbon Park peddling these Masala Murmura cones over a hot coal pot !!

The quantities I have mentioned are indicative, but feel free to make any changes as per your palate. This snack is similar to Jhaal Muri of Bengal, and make a completely guilt free snack with your evening tea or even for between-meals snacking ! Sometimes, I add shredded carrots and chopped oniosn and cucumbers to make an instant bhelJ

Preparation time : Nil. No cooking required.

Ingredients:

·         Murmuras / Kadalepuri – ¼ kg

·         Groundnuts – ¼ cup

·         Dalia / fried gram – 4 tbsp

·         Curry leaves – few

·         Salt – 1 tsp

·         Mustard seeds – 1 tsp

·         Hing – 1 teaspoon (opt)

·         Broken dry red chillies – 1 or 2 (Opt – but recommended – Kashmiri Variety)

·         Turmeric – 1 tsp

·         Oil – 1 tbsp

·         Peeled Garlic pods – 3 or 4 (completely optional)

Method:

1)      In a dry pan, roast groundnuts / peanuts and fried gram separately ensring they do not burn. Cool. You may additionally peel the roasted groundnuts but I add it whole.

2)     Heat another pan, splutter mustard seeds, add curry leaves, red chillies, garlic.  Add turmeric and switch off the pan.

3)     Now add puffed rice, groundnuts, hing, salt, dalia and mix well into the pan.

4)     Cool and store in an airtight container and serve as tea-time snack !
