Bakery Style Masala Toast is a delicious and quick snack made with leftover bread. Serve as is or with some ketchup.

A quick to make snack is Bangalore Bakery Style Toast. It brings back so many memories of wolfing down these delicacies while growing up. Iyengar bakeries in Bangalore were (and are) sources of (yes, over processed but) quick treats that could keep you full till dinner time. Not to forget they were (again, are) pocket friendly too. I remember even during college days, when pocket money was either nil or frugal, birthday treats were often at these bakeries, with a shared veg puff or a cake, and that gave us so much happiness.

Other bakery treats included Nippattu (baked at my place), Honey Cake, Khara / Masala Buns, Om (ajwain / carrom seed) biscuits and many more...

History of Bakery Toast

I have a feeling (grown up now), that this dish was a very clever way ot using up un-sold bread for the bakery and it was a win-win for customers too, with all the spicy toppings on top.. Writing about all these again and revisiting this post has got me so nostalgic that I want to just pack my bags and take a trip down memory lane and enjoy all the Bakery treats, guilt free!

Grandmom used to mention that bakeries thrive on people like us, who bought regularly from them. But in the carefree days of growing up, all this advice was thrown to the wind. I make these toast (as its known locally in Bangalore) regularly for a evening snack, and its quite filling. Mostly finished in the oven, but if you dont have one or don't want to use it. Don’t miss on grilling them a bit (or in the tava) for a crusty yet soft snack.

I find it so interesting the variety of savory vegetable toppings and fillings Indian food uses for bread, for us its usually some kind of meat and cheese or PB&J

Haven't had this masala toast but sounds very tasty. I find now more and more modern bakeries are replacing the traditional ones, which means some of the unique and easy Bangalore bakery style foods will die. Going to make this toast at home for breakfast. Thanks for sharing the recipe.
