Farali Samo Khichdi or Moraiyo Khichdi is a quick, Gluten Free savory pudding made with Barnyard Millet for fasts during festivals in India

Fasting in Indian Festivals

Fasting for festivals like #Shivratri or #Navratri is huge amongst the Indian community here and overseas. While certain foods are prohibited, a long list of approved ‘Farali (fasting) food ’ makes this entire exercise of fasting enjoyable too. Ingredients like Samo (Moraiyo) or Sabudana (Sago / Tapioca pearls), Rajgira (Amaranth seeds), Potato, Sweet Potato, Phool Makhana (foxnuts) , Singhada (water Chestnut) are favoured amongst this Farali list. Also, normal salt is replaced by Sendha Namak, and milk and yogurt are also used for fasting, as are fruits. Grains are largely avoided and pseudo grains are welcomed.

Today, we see a quick to make Samo Khichdi that is delicious as well as filling. Not just for fasting, we have started inducting this Khichdi even for light dinners or brunch too as its easy to digest and light on the stomach.

What is Sama ?

Samo is known as Barnyard Millet in English, Sama ke Chawal in Hindi, Samo / Maraiyo in Gujrati, Bhagar / Varai in Marathi, Kuthiravali in Tamil and Oodalu in Telugu. Samo or Samak rice which is very high in resistant starch is abundantly loaded with fibre, protein and micronutrients like zinc and iron. The release of the slow sugars / glycogen keeps you filled for hours and yet doesn’t spike the sugars erratically. Samo is also Gluten Free making it perfect for those with Gluten Intolerance.

PS - This is not a medical advice as am not a qualified practitioner, please do consult your local doctor before making any changes to your normal diet.

What can I serve this Khichdi with?

Plain homemade curd with chopped cucumbers or Farali Green chutney.  Ensure it is served hot as it turns lumpy when it is cold. Of course, if one uses more ghee than in the recipe, it may remain soft, but this measure was prefect for us.

Prep time - 5 mins, Soaking time - 30 mins; Cook time - 15 mins. Serves - 2

I remember my grandma making this khichadi for Janamashtmi, but it was just Sama rice. The addition of potatoes and peanuts must be adding so much flavor., great idea to make it a complete dish.
